Ronchi di Cialla, Saviors of Schioppettino

Ronchi di Cialla is a family-run winery founded in 1970 by Paolo and Dina Rapuzzi in the small Cialla valley of Friuli's Colli Orientali, near the Slovenian border. The family committed early on to growing only indigenous Friulian grapes, and they're best known for rescuing Schioppettino from near extinction after the variety had been declared legally unfit to plant. That effort earned them recognition, and the Cialla cru is now officially tied to their labels.

The estate today is run by sons Pierpaolo and Ivan, who are also trained entomologists and use that background to farm with minimal intervention, earning the winery a Biodiversity Friendly certification. Beyond Schioppettino, they work with other native varieties like Refosco, Ribolla Gialla, Verduzzo, and Picolit, and are known for releasing wines only after long aging, including library vintages going back to the 1980s.
