An Evening on Etna
Giulia Monteleone is a young Sicilian winemaker whose small estate is located on the slopes of Mount Etna, where volcanic soils and high elevation shape the character of her wines. Her production focuses on indigenous grape varieties such as Nerello Mascalese for reds and Carricante for whites, emphasizing the expression of Etna’s unique terroir. The wines are typically made from old, pre-phylloxera vines and are crafted with minimal intervention using organic practices. Both her Etna Rosso and Etna Bianco are known for their minerality, freshness, and balance as well as salinity and volcanic complexity due to the proximity to the sea and the jet-black soils in which her vines grow. Overall, Monteleone’s wines are small-production, terroir-driven expressions that capture the elegance and energy of Mount Etna’s dynamic landscape.
