The Other Side of Friuli
For this Monday Night Dinner, we are taking a very short trip across the Friuli border to the Goriska Brda, in Slovenia. This area, along with Colli Goriziano, share culinary and winemaking traditions that go back generations.
Beyond the traditions, they also share the same grape varities and soil type, the calcium-rich Ponca, or Opoka in this case, which gives the wines their distinct mineral character. Marjan Simcic is a fifth generation winemaker working with local varitietes like Pinot Grigio and Ribolla Gialla, as well as cultivating elegant Pinot Noir and Bordeaux blends. The wines are pure reflections of this incredible terroir, and a great reminder that a line on a map doesn't always separate culture.
